The FVANSW’s respect for the Formula Vee National Titles could not have been better demonstrated after another year of domination by FVANSW drivers after FVANSW drivers took out four of the top six places in the 1200 and 1600 classes (well, we held four of the six places until the following Monday morning, when Stephen Butcher had his 1200 class win belatedly stripped from him by the Stewards, but more on this in a moment).
Daniel Reynolds has clearly stamped his Formula Vee Legend status on himself after winning the Nationals 1600 class for a consecutive year, with another Formula Vee Legend, Ben Porter, taking out second place in the final only a few seconds behind. FVANSW President, Dylan Thomas, pushed Daniel and Ben throughout the weekend, and steered his trusty Stinger into third place just four seconds behind Ben at the end of the final.
Leigh Porter and Morgan Freemantle upheld more of the FVANSW?s honour, with ninth and eleventh places in the final against some stiff home-town competition. In the 1200 class, Stephen Butcher battled with Bruce Welch and Nordine El-Hafidoun for most of the weekend, right up until the final corner of the final race, when Butcher and Welch touched wheels against bodywork, causing Welch to spear off the circuit and Butchers nosecone to fly into the sandhills.
Butcher was awarded the trophy, only to see it removed from his grasp after the Stewards reviewed the incident the following morning. WA’s Derek Bromlewe was ultimately awarded the 1200 Nationals Title, with Bruce in third place and James Macdonald in third. Commiserations to Stephen and Bruce, but congratulations to Derek.
Daniel was fast immediately out of the packing crate from the time his Sabre first turned a wheel on Western Australian soil, and was clearly the deserving winner. Ben endured some tuning issues early in the weekend, and at least managed to spoil Daniel?s 100% 2011 winning record when he forced Daniel into second place in the final heat on Sunday morning.
Congratulations and thanks to the FVAWA organizers for organizing a great Formula Vee Nationals for 2011, despite some difficulties with officialdom throughout the weekend. Congratulations and thanks also to all the local and interstate competitors for helping to make the racing as excellent as expected for Formula Vee.
